Bolivia

After 54 years of supporting the country's development, the Swiss bilateral cooperation definitively concluded its work in Bolivia on June 30, 2024, through a responsible closure process. During these years, the Swiss Cooperation has implemented more than 150 projects and has invested around USD 750 million, always with the objective of supporting efforts to improve the lives of the most vulnerable Bolivian population.

We hope that these Swiss contributions will endure over time and continue to strengthen the efforts of the Bolivian State and the various actors working in the country, to move towards sustainable and inclusive development. Switzerland's contributions to the country's development are systematised in the following documents, with the aim of serving as a reference and inspiration for future development actions in the country.

SDC 54 Years of Cooperation with Bolivia

Switzerland’s contributions in development are grouped together in four fields: 1. Economic development 2. Environment and natural resources management 3. Governability and human rights 4. Culture and development. The SDC perspective, with different approaches, was to promote sustainable development, reducing poverty and inequalities; helping to increase resilience, and strengthening the population and institutions.

Bolivia: Responding to Partner Countries’ Development Priorities: How to do Things Right

SDC's systemic approach to rural development in Bolivia has had a positive impact on the people in the country's rural areas, where poverty and inequality are prevalent. This report argues that SDC’s engagement of more than 20 years in the sector proofs: rural development is more than agricultural production. Agroecology is a revealing approach to understand the links to the impact of climate change and underlaying social and cultural dynamics of indigenous people. This case study is without doubts valuable for future engagements in other countries.
